Explore the recently reconstructed casements, also known as the GOTHIC CELLARS, newly-opened to the public. This permanent exhibition, ‘The Historic Faces of Vyšehrad’, has been prepared by the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument in co-operation with the City of Prague Museum, with exhibits loaned by the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and the Royal Collegiate Chapter of SS Peter & Paul at Vyšehrad. Visitors will see evidence of human presence and activity at Vyšehrad obtained by archaeological excavation, among the most important pieces of which are the sarcophagus recovered during research around the Church of SS Peter & Paul, as well as objects documenting settlement at Vyšehrad in the third and fourth centuries before Christ, objects linked to the work of the Vyšehrad Chapter from the 11th to the 20th centuries, insignia recalling the incorporation of an independent Vyšehrad into Prague proper, and relics of the activities of certain Vyšehrad guilds. Other exceptional exhibits include a small, 11th century cross found as early as at the end of the 19th century in the Vyšehrad cemetery on the site of the grave of composer Bedřich Smetana, and a talc medallion of roughly the same age, found beneath Vyšehrad Rock.
